Promoting Your Website, Offers Or Business Using Google Alerts

One of the coolest most unused ways to more effectively promote yourself online for both SEO & simply getting the word out about what you have to offer is Google Alerts. It’s easy to setup, I’m going to tell you how I  & others have used it and what you can expect from it.

What Is Google Alerts?

For starters, Google Alerts is a tool that lets you enter a search term & then when Google finds something new on the web related to your query it will send you an e-mail address you specify or it can even setup an RSS feed for you. Both great efficient easy ways for you to see what kind of new content related to your search is being found by Google across the web.

How I Used Alerts & How You Can Use Them Too

The most recent site that I setup & primarily used Google Alerts to promote is one of mine that has a fair amount of competition, so I wanted to ensure that I stayed up to date on any kind of high quality content that came out. Doing so helps make sure that I have my “expert” voice heard in comments and also gain any kind of SEO value from the comments as well. I also was able to identify some new locations to gain links from, which in turn helped me rank an extremely new site very quickly even with all the crazy Panda, Penguin Google updates.

Promoting Affiliate Offers

Now I was, well am promoting what I’d call an authority site using Google Alerts but there’s a ton of different ways to use them as well. I’ve seen people post in forums that they’re making up to a couple hundred dollars a day promoting Clickbank products (I don’t believe everything I read but I definitely see how it’s possible). A simple example of how to do that would be to pick out a few offers & find out what kind of keywords or phrases people are going to talk about when they need to solve a problem that this product has to offer.

I.E. If someone said “how can I lose 10lbs before a wedding in 2 weeks”, and the Clickbank product you are promoting said it can help someone lose 10lbs within 2 weeks then you could add your link in a comment. A better way to do that would be to simply already have a weight loss niche site setup and drive the traffic to that. After you’ve seen some of the more common problems that are out there add a couple posts that you can direct the traffic to that are geared to solving the specific common issue that people are having.

Promoting A Business

Do you own a business? You can use Google Alerts too & possibly gain some huge profits in the process. It doesn’t matter if you’re a web design firm or a roofing contractor, I see major possibilities with Google Alerts for any kind of a niche. Setup a search query that identifies the city & or state you’re targeting as well as any kind of questions someone might ask. I.E. “roofing billings, mt” or “roofers billings, mt”.  It’s basically a free source of leads, all you have to do is check your e-mail =P.

How I Like To Setup My Alerts

If you just start setting up a ton of alerts for a single e-mail address it’s going to start getting really cluttered. Doing any kind of internet marketing can get overwhelming if you’re not organized, this is especially true for people who have major ADHD like myself. I setup an individual e-mail address for each alert I create, from there I’ll setup the e-mail in a client such as Thunderbird. I also like to have some comments or posts already written on the subject that at the very least I can use as a guideline to quickly make a relevant comment/post or that I’m able to simply copy and paste if I’m feeling lazy and in a hurry.

I’ve been doing keyword and competition research for a while now and I don’t need a lot of the information that Market Samurai brings to the table.

The other thing I like about Serp Attacks is it doesn’t take a day to load, it tells me which sites are at what position, how many back links they have and their Page Rank, domain age, if the keywords are in the title, description and any H1 tags. I mean that’s really all I need to know if I’m going to go after a keyword or not. It even has a difficulty meter for those that are just starting out with SEO and don’t know how to evaluate how hard it’s going to be to rank for a particular keyword or not.
